Content:

When you create a crypto wallet, one of the first things you’ll see is a list of 12 to 24 simple words. That list is your recovery phrase, and it is the most important thing you’ll own as a crypto user. This guide explains what it is, why it matters, and how to keep it safe.

What is a recovery phrase?

A recovery phrase is a list of 12 to 24 everyday words. It is the master backup for your self-custody wallet. It is created when you first set up your wallet, and it can restore your wallet, and everything in it, if your phone is lost, stolen, or broken.

You may also hear it called a seed phrase or a mnemonic phrase. These are three names for the same thing:

  • Recovery phrase focuses on its job: restoring your wallet.

  • Seed phrase focuses on how your wallet’s keys grow from it.

  • Mnemonic is the technical name for a list of words like this.

How does it work?

  1. When you create your wallet, a random recovery phrase is generated for you.

  2. Your wallet uses this phrase to create all your private keys and addresses.

  3. You write the phrase down and keep it somewhere safe and offline.

  4. If you ever lose your device, you can use the phrase to restore your wallet in the Trust Wallet app.

  5. Anyone who has the phrase can do the same, so it must stay secret.

Think of it as the key to a vault. Whoever holds it controls what’s inside.

How to protect your recovery phrase:

Do

Don’t

Write it on paper or metal and store it offline

Save it as a screenshot or in a cloud note

Keep copies in safe, separate places

Share it with anyone, ever

Double-check it during setup

Type it into random websites or pop-ups

Treat it like the keys to a vault

Trust anyone claiming to be “support” who asks for it

What happens if you lose it?

If you lose both your recovery phrase and access to your device, your funds are most likely gone for good. No company can reset it for you. That’s the trade-off of self-custody: you get full control, and you’re fully responsible for your backup. Taking a few minutes to store your phrase properly now can save you a lot of trouble later.

Your recovery phrase and Trust Wallet:

When you set up Trust Wallet, it generates a secret recovery phrase that only you should ever see. Trust Wallet never has access to your phrase and will never ask you for it. This phrase is your only backup and the key to your funds across 100+ blockchains. Store it offline, keep it private, and never share it with anyone, even if they say they work for Trust Wallet.

Quick recap:

  • Your recovery phrase is 12 to 24 words that back up your wallet.

  • Recovery phrase, seed phrase, and mnemonic all mean the same thing.

  • Anyone with your phrase can access your funds, so never share it.

  • Store it offline, away from screenshots, cloud notes, and websites.

  • If it’s lost and your device is gone too, your funds can’t be recovered.
